In the Morning When I Rise

As I lay there in bed each morning blinking my eyes awake she would quietly open the door and sing "It's time to ri- ise and shi-ine and give God the glory, glory!"

I look back on it now and I know.

Even if she woke up tired from a sleepless night or an exhausting day the day before, even though she might have taken a moment of peace downstairs alone, even though she may have wanted to lay in bed herself she decided to wake me up with smiles and joy.

My mom chose to take that time in the morning to love her children and start the day off cheerfully praising God for all the blessings she had. Naming them; claiming them.

Morning dawns early with small ones. As they clamor out of their own beds and into mine to snuggle under the covers and share in the warmth it occurs to me that at each interval I have the opportunity to show them God's love. God's great big love for just them.

I cannot claim morning time joy the way my mom could. She was a master of it. She had the uncanny ability to make morning time sweet and pleasant. She made morning less about the worries of the day and more about looking up and saying "Thank you."

I see it there in their faces in the morning these days - morning time joy. Life. Laughter.

They're happy. They are glad to be alive. They are glad to see me. I can't help but to say, "Thank you, Lord."

"But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your loving kindness in the morning, For You have been my stronghold And a refuge..." Psalm 59:16

  4. Sweet! I used to get frustrated at my "interrupted" mornings, but now I've come to look forward to the morning snuggles with my kiddies when they sneak in my room after Daddy leaves for work early in the morning.

  5. Such a good reminder! My husband is like that with the kids in the morning. I love it and would like to be more pleasant when they wake up. I KNOW that if I were to be up before them (as my husband always is), that I would have a much easier time of it!!! ;)
